A State of Emergency and a Public Health Emergency has been declared by the State of New Jersey to ramp up New Jersey’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

As your Mayor, please know that any information shared is not to create panic but to ensure we are prepared and our community is informed. Early today, I met with our Council President, Borough Administrator, Department Heads, and First Responders.

We've decided in the interest of public health that the Borough of Dumont will take the following actions to minimize the potential transmission of the COVID-19 virus in our community. 

 

The following Borough facilities will have limited access to the public until further notice:  

  • Dumont Borough Hall – We will be limiting access to the public. If you need service or assistance you must make an appointment. Please call 201-387-5022 and follow the appropriate instructions.
  • Dumont Police Department Facility - Please dial 911 for an emergency. For all non-emergency calls, please call 201-387-5000 for further assistance.  

 

The following Borough facilities will be closed to the public until further notice:

  • Dumont Dixon Homestead Library.
  • The Dumont Department of Public Works Building.
  • The general and public meeting area of the Dumont Senior Center.

 

All vital day-to-day operations will continue to remain the same at this time.

 

 Recreation:

  • All recreation programs managed by Dumont will be postponed until further notice. For further questions or concerns please call Recreation Director Tony Como at 201-384-1453.

 

Public Meetings Postponed:

  • The Borough is postponing all public meetings at this time, including Mayor and Council meetings.
  • Dumont Judge Stylianou has informed us that the court date of March 23rd has been canceled. Any questions or concerns, please call 201-387-5032. 

 

Once again, Borough operations and services will continue as usual at this time. If you need assistance with any Borough department, please call (201) 387-5022 and you will be guided through the proper process. Executive Order No. 103 declares a state of emergency and public health emergency across all 21 counties in New Jersey. Bergen County has also declared that a health emergency exists regarding COVID-19. The County Health Officer and all County Departments and Divisions shall work collaboratively to determine and execute effective strategies, initiatives, protocols and procedures to prevent, mitigate and combat the spread of COVID-19, particularly among the most vulnerable and at-risk populations, including but not limited to senior centers and nursing homes; and take all action to the extent necessary to maintain the public health with respect to treatment or containment of persons with or possibly exposed to COVID-19. As a further reminder, The New Jersey State Department of Health, in partnership with the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System, has made available a 24-hour hotline to answer the public’s questions. Temporary Closing of The Dumont Senior Center:

  • The general and public meeting area of the Dumont Senior Center will be closed until further notice. We are proactively taking this approach due to our senior population being more vulnerable to COVID-19.
  • The Senior Bus will still provide regular transportation to medical appointments and food shopping. The Senior Center office and Social Services office will remain open during this time. The food pantry will be closed for visitors, but food will be handed out by appt. only.

  • The Senior Center will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized prior to its re-opening.

Cancellation Non-Essential Borough Meetings:

  • All non-essential public meetings for the Borough of Dumont will be postponed until further notice.
  • While the Borough of Dumont will remain open and will operate with regular business hours, our Mayor and Council meetings will be temporarily relocated to the Dixon Homestead Library, located at 180 Washington Ave in Dumont. Notices will be posted for the public.

Dumont BOE Superintendent Triggiano and I have been in contact regarding the Coronavirus.  Any information shared is not to create panic but to ensure we are prepared and our community is informed.  Superintendent Triggiano has confirmed the Dumont BOE employee, and the employee's son that was previously reported is asymptomatic but has self-quarantined as a precaution. Please find the Superintendent's letter to parents below.

The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China. The Borough of Dumont and Dumont Board of Health has been in active communication with Bergen County and State officials and will continue to work closely with public health officers as we monitor COVID-19. The Board of Health has met with borough officials and Mayor Andrew LaBruno participated in a conference call with Governor Murphy and The New Jersey Department of Health. It is vital that accurate information is dispensed to the public and necessary updates will be provided as appropriate and when available.

 

Public Hotline and Information

The New Jersey State Department of Health, in partnership with the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System, has made available a 24-hour hotline to answer the public’s questions. You can contact them at 1-800-222-1222.

CDC Prevention Recommendations:

For the general public, the immediate health risk from COVID-19 is considered low. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure, including but not limited to Fever, Cough, Shortness of breath.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

The Dumont Department of Public Works is accepting applications for seasonal help for grass and leaf season. Applications can be picked up at the DPW Building at 1 Aladdin Avenue, Dumont, NJ, between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Rate of pay will be $14.00 per hour. Landscaping knowledge a plus. Start date is Monday, March 16, 2020.

On February 18th, the Borough of Dumont was made aware that on January 8th, the Bergen County Department of Health performed a limited lead hazard assessment in four classrooms at Grant Elementary School.  The results of the test determined the presence of lead hazards.  The Borough has contacted officials from the Dumont Board of Education and Bergen County Department of Health to learn that the Board of Education is compliant in this matter and will be performing a lead abatement remediation during the week of April 6th.  In the interest of public awareness and transparency, we are notifying the community.  For more information, please contact the Dumont Board of Education Business Administrator at 201-387-3070.  Please find the correspondence from the Bergen County Department of Health below.

1/21/20 Dumont, NJ – Dumont Mayor Andrew LaBruno and Dumont Council President Carole Stewart announced the selection of Christopher Tully of Bergenfield, NJ, for the position of Borough Administrator and Issa Ahmad Abbasi of Mahwah, NJ for the position of part-time Chief Financial Officer.

Tully currently serves as a personnel administrator for the County of Bergen and represents the 38th Legislative District in the New Jersey General Assembly. Before his involvement in state and county government, he served seven years on neighboring Bergenfield, NJ’s Borough Council, and as District Director for United States Representative Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ 5th).

“Chris’ knowledge of government – municipal, county, state and federal – will be a great asset to this administration and the residents of Dumont,” said Mayor LaBruno. “Having known him for many years, I have always been impressed by his strong communications skills, ability to grasp complex issues, and commitment to constituent services. Bottom line, he gets it.”
Dumont Council President Carole Stewart added, “Chris is exactly what Dumont needs right now, an experienced and dedicated individual who can focus both on big and small problems. His sharp mind and ability to learn quickly will serve us well.” Tully will pursue municipal management certifications during his personal time.

Abbasi currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer for the Township of Teaneck, NJ. Prior to his current position, Abbasi joined the Township in 2010 as an executive assistant and quickly rose to the position of Acting-Township Clerk then Township Clerk until his appointment as CFO in 2019. He is a graduate of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey and holds a Master’s in Public Administration, and is a Registered Municipal Clerk and Certified Municipal Financial Officer.

“Issa’s rapid career advancement and certification represent exactly what we are looking for in filling these key positions. His ability to grasp the Borough’s finances and administer them efficiently will be for Dumont taxpayers’ benefit,” said Mayor LaBruno. Council President Stewart added, “Ensuring that every penny of Dumont’s roughly $20m annual budget is accounted for is no small task. I’m confident Issa’s up for the job and will serve our residents well.”

Resolutions appointing Tully and Abbasi will be on tonight’s Borough Council meeting to be held in the Dumont Senior Center located at 37 Dumont Avenue, Dumont, NJ, at 6:30 PM.
