The Dumont Police Department, Dumont Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Dumont Volunteer Fire Department continues to be ready, willing and able to assist all individuals who may call upon us for assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For emergency calls please call 9-1-1 for all non-emergency calls please call 201-387-5000. In an attempt to minimize personal contact between Officer and the general public and thus minimize the potential spread of COVID-19 the following modified operating procedures have been implemented.

Individuals who come to Police headquarters:

  • Individuals will initially communicate with a Dumont Police Department employee via a phone which is mounted on the outside of our headquarters.
  • Based on your needs an Officer/Dispatcher will either come outside to speak with you or they will allow you into our facility.

Individuals who need an Officer at their physical location:

  • An assessment will be made related to whether your call for assistance requires an Officer on scene or if this communication can be done via a phone call.
  • If an Emergency Responder is needed at your location pre-arrival questions will be asked to confirm that your location is safe for us to respond to.
  • If a location is deemed to be unsafe the responding Officer will either take precautionary measures or the officer may conduct their investigation from outside your residence/business.
  • In order to protect you and all of our Emergency Services Personnel we ask that you inform the Dumont Police Department call taker if you or anyone in your household/business is experiencing any flu-like symptoms.

You will be screened for flu-like symptoms.  If you are experiencing fever, cough or mild respiratory illness and you have NO shortness of breath or breathing difficulty, it is recommended you stay home. The Volunteer Ambulance Corps will be dispatched for difficulty breathing.

  • If you are symptomatic and concerned, it is important to call ahead to your primary care provider, emergency department, or urgent care center first, in advance of your arrival, so that staff can guide you and respond appropriately.
  • Do not go to any health care provider without calling first. Calling first helps to prevent the possible spread of illness by limiting exposure to others.

To stay healthy and limit the possibility of transmission of COVID-19 please remember to:

  • Wash your hands
  • Avoid touching your face, and practicing social distancing.
  • This can help ease the burden on our first responders and try to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed with patients.
  • Call 9-1-1 for medical emergencies.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding related to these modified operating procedures.  Please remember we are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and we will continue to provide the same excellent services to each and every one of you as we work through this crisis together.

It is our endeavor to ensure the safety, health, and social well-being of our community; and this includes keeping you informed with credibly sourced information and options. Only get your information from official sources (i.e., CDC, State, County, and Local Governments); consider information from email threads and Facebook as ‘hearsay’ until you can verify from official sources.

The New Jersey Department of Health also has information about COVID-19 that is specific to our communities and state. A COVID-19 call center is open 24/7 and can be reached at 1-800-222-1222 or 1-800-962-1253 (if in NJ but using a non-NJ cell phone). Message from Mayor LaBruno:

Today, I was made aware that a Dumont resident had tested presumptive positive for the COVID-19 virus. This is preliminary information, and as we receive more updates, we will provide them to the public.

The resident has been interviewed, and is currently quarantined.

Throughout the afternoon, I have been working with our County Executive and County Health officials. I will work with our COVID-19 emergency response team in Dumont to discuss next steps while we await results from the Bergen County Department of Health.

Like many communities around New Jersey and our nation, we had already taken steps to do all we can to limit the transmission of COVID-19. Earlier this week, we closed our senior center to protect our residents that are most vulnerable. Yesterday, we took further steps by announcing the postponing of all recreation programs and public meetings. We also closed our Library and DPW building to the public, and limited public access to our borough hall and police station.

We will continue to work with County Executive James Tedesco, County Health Officials, and our COVID-19 response team as we move forward in protecting the lives of our residents.

A State of Emergency and a Public Health Emergency has been declared by the State of New Jersey to ramp up New Jersey’s efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.

As your Mayor, please know that any information shared is not to create panic but to ensure we are prepared and our community is informed. Early today, I met with our Council President, Borough Administrator, Department Heads, and First Responders.

We've decided in the interest of public health that the Borough of Dumont will take the following actions to minimize the potential transmission of the COVID-19 virus in our community.

The following Borough facilities will have limited access to the public until further notice:

  • Dumont Borough Hall – We will be limiting access to the public. If you need service or assistance you must make an appointment. Please call 201-387-5022 and follow the appropriate instructions.
  • Dumont Police Department Facility - Please dial 911 for an emergency. For all non-emergency calls, please call 201-387-5000 for further assistance.

The following Borough facilities will be closed to the public until further notice:

  • Dumont Dixon Homestead Library.
  • The Dumont Department of Public Works Building.
  • The general and public meeting area of the Dumont Senior Center.

All vital day-to-day operations will continue to remain the same at this time.

 Recreation:

  • All recreation programs managed by Dumont will be postponed until further notice. For further questions or concerns please call Recreation Director Tony Como at 201-384-1453.

Public Meetings Postponed:

  • The Borough is postponing all public meetings at this time, including Mayor and Council meetings.
  • Dumont Judge Stylianou has informed us that the court date of March 23rd has been canceled. Any questions or concerns, please call 201-387-5032.

Once again, Borough operations and services will continue as usual at this time. If you need assistance with any Borough department, please call (201) 387-5022 and you will be guided through the proper process. Please check for further updates and follow all recommended safety guidelines during this time.

If you have any further questions, the New Jersey State Department of Health, in partnership with the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System, has made available a 24-hour hotline, you can contact them at 1-800-222-1222.

Our decision to make these adjustments is not to cause panic but to ensure we are taking the proper precautions to preserve the health and safety of our residents and employees. To be clear, we have no confirmed cases in Dumont we feel it is essential to be proactive as opposed to being reactive.

Thank you and God Bless
